What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the team has decided eligibility and agreed accommodations tied to specific needs, who carries out each one and when the plan is reviewed. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Gather evaluation data from several sources beforehand: teacher input, assessments, health information and parent observations.
  2. 2Invite people who know the student, understand the evaluation data and know the placement options, as the regulation requires.
  3. 3Build the accommodations as a table: each row a need, an accommodation, where it applies and who carries it out.
  4. 4Agree how the plan reaches every teacher, including substitutes and electives, before you close.
  5. 5Set the review date and give the family a copy. The summary lists every decision made in the meeting.

Questions people ask

What happens at a 504 meeting?
The team reviews information about the student from several sources, decides whether the student is eligible under Section 504 and agrees accommodations, who provides them and when the plan is reviewed.
Who attends a 504 plan meeting?
The regulation calls for people who know the student, understand the evaluation data and know the placement options. That usually means the parents, teachers, a 504 coordinator and sometimes a counselor or nurse.
How often is a 504 plan reviewed?
Section 504 requires periodic reevaluation. Many districts review plans every year, and following IDEA's three-year reevaluation schedule is one accepted way to meet the requirement.
What is the difference between a 504 plan and an IEP?
An IEP provides specialized instruction under IDEA. A 504 plan gives accommodations and access under civil rights law for students whose disability limits a major life activity.
