In short

SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. This template is a 45-minute team workshop: everyone posts rough goals from their phone, the team dot-votes the top three, then rewrites each one letter by letter into a SMART sentence with one owner and a check-in date.

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, the team has three SMART goals, each with one owner and a first check-in date.

How to run it

  1. 1Show one real before-and-after rewrite so everyone sees what 'SMART' looks like in your work.
  2. 2Collect rough goals from phones first and dot-vote them; only the top three get the full treatment.
  3. 3Take each goal through the five letters, adding the missing piece in each area, and write the finished sentence in the SMART goal area.
  4. 4Give each goal one owner and a check-in date, and open the next check-in with the confidence score from today.

Questions people ask

What are SMART goals?
Goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. The idea comes from George T. Doran's 1981 article in Management Review.
What is an example of a SMART goal?
'Cut time to first login for new customers from 5 days to 2 by 31 March, owned by the onboarding lead.' It names what changes, by how much, why it matters and by when.
How do you set goals as a team?
Collect everyone's goals first, vote on the few that matter most, then make those SMART together. Fewer goals with clear owners beat a long list nobody tracks.
