In short

A team charter is a short agreement, written by the team, about its purpose and how it works: communication, meetings, decisions and handling conflict. This template collects norms from everyone's phone across five areas, dot-votes them, keeps two or three per area and ends with a commitment vote in 60 minutes.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, the team has agreed a short charter of norms everyone commits to and a date to review it.

How to run it

  1. 1Run it when a team forms, when someone joins, or when friction keeps coming up.
  2. 2Collect norms from phones as behaviors, area by area, so everyone writes and not just the loudest voices.
  3. 3Dot-vote, keep two or three norms per area, then take a commitment vote and hear any objections.
  4. 4Read it at the start of the next few meetings and review it after a month.

Questions people ask

What is a team charter?
A team's own written agreement about why it exists and how it works together. It usually covers purpose, communication, meetings, decision-making and what to do when things go wrong.
What's the difference between a team charter and a working agreement?
A working agreement focuses on day-to-day norms; agile teams often keep one. A team charter adds the team's purpose, roles and decision rights.
What are some examples of meeting norms?
Start and end on time; agenda shared a day before; one conversation at a time; phones away unless we're voting on them; every meeting ends with owners and dates.
What are good ground rules for meetings?
A few the group agrees on and keeps, such as: be on time, listen to understand, disagree with ideas not people, and leave with clear actions. Fewer rules that hold beat a long list.
