In short

An architecture review is a meeting where senior engineers assess a proposed design before it's built. This 60-minute agenda starts with the decision needed, reviews options, quality attributes and risks, takes an anonymous reviewers' call and ends with the decision recorded as an architecture decision record (ADR).

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the board has decided on the proposal, with conditions and an owner, and the decision is recorded as an ADR. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Require a design document 48 hours before the review, and ask reviewers to leave comments on it first.
  2. 2Open with the decision needed, so the discussion stays on it.
  3. 3Walk the quality attributes one at a time, and spend most of the time on hard-to-reverse choices.
  4. 4Take the anonymous reviewers' call, then agree the decision, conditions and owner out loud.
  5. 5Turn the summary into an architecture decision record the same day.

Questions people ask

What is an architecture review board?
A group of senior engineers and architects that reviews significant technical designs for consistency, risk and long-term cost before they're built.
What is an architecture decision record?
A short document that records one architectural decision: its context, the decision itself and its consequences, so future engineers know why the system is the way it is.
What makes an architecture review effective?
A design document sent ahead, a clear decision to make, focus on the choices that are hard to reverse, and a written record of the outcome.
