In short

A scrum of scrums is a short meeting where representatives of several Scrum teams coordinate dependencies and impediments. This 20-minute agenda uses the four common questions (what affects others, what's next, what's blocked and what might get in another team's way) and adds an anonymous integration-confidence vote.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, teams know which dependencies and impediments affect them, and every impediment has an owner. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Each team sends one representative, often a developer close to the work rather than only the Scrum Master.
  2. 2Keep to the four questions and to what affects other teams; the timers keep it to 20 minutes.
  3. 3Log impediments with an owner and solve them afterwards with only the people involved.
  4. 4Hold it daily or two to three times a week, depending on how tightly the teams depend on each other.

Questions people ask

Is the scrum of scrums one of the Scrum events?
No. The Scrum Guide's events are the sprint, sprint planning, daily scrum, sprint review and sprint retrospective. The scrum of scrums is a scaling practice, used in frameworks such as Scrum@Scale.
How is a scrum of scrums different from a daily scrum?
The daily scrum is one team planning its day. The scrum of scrums brings one representative from each team together to manage what crosses team boundaries.
How often should a scrum of scrums meet?
Daily for tightly connected teams, or two to three times a week when dependencies are lighter.
