How to run it

  1. 1If you can, run it next to a forklift and point to each part on the pre-use check.
  2. 2Ask operators and pedestrians to join: half the checks are about sharing the floor.
  3. 3Let everyone vote before you reveal. Answers and OSHA references are in the speaker notes.
  4. 4This is a refresher. Operators still need formal training and evaluation under OSHA 1910.178.

Questions people ask

What should a forklift pre-use inspection include?
A walk-around for leaks, tires, forks, mast and chains; fluids or battery; horn, lights and backup alarm; brakes, steering and hydraulic controls; and the seat belt.
How often do forklift operators need retraining?
OSHA requires an evaluation at least every three years, and refresher training after an incident, a near miss, unsafe operation or a change in truck or workplace.
What should you do if a forklift tips over?
On a sit-down truck, stay in the seat with the belt on, hold the wheel, brace your feet and lean away from the fall. Don't jump.
