Confined space safety talk

How to run it

1. 1Before the talk, list the confined spaces on your site and have a blank entry permit to hand round.
2. 2Open with the word cloud so the crew names the spaces they actually work near.
3. 3Walk through the definitions and the three roles, then run the role and testing checks. The answers and the OSHA references are in the speaker notes.
4. 4Spend the most time on the rescue question. Make sure everyone can say who they'd call and why nobody goes in after a downed entrant.
5. 5This is a refresher, not entry training. Entrants, attendants and supervisors still need role training under your permit program.

Questions people ask

What is a permit-required confined space?

A confined space that also has, or could have, a hazardous atmosphere, an engulfment risk, a shape that could trap someone, or another serious hazard. Entry needs a written permit.

What are the three roles in confined space entry?

The authorized entrant, who goes in; the attendant, who stays outside and monitors; and the entry supervisor, who authorizes and ends the entry.

What is the acceptable oxygen level for confined space entry?

Between 19.5% and 23.5% oxygen. Test oxygen first, then flammable gases, then toxic gases.

Is this talk enough to train confined space entrants?

No. It's a refresher and discussion tool. Entrants, attendants and supervisors need role training under your written permit program.
