In short

A hot work permit is written approval for welding, cutting, grinding or other spark-producing work, confirming fire precautions are in place first. This talk covers the 35-foot rule, fire watch duties and an eight-point permit checklist, with six crew checks based on OSHA 1910.252 answered on phones.

How to run it

  1. 1Bring a copy of your site's hot work permit and compare it with the checklist slide.
  2. 2Ask the word cloud question so the talk is about the places hot work really happens here.
  3. 3Run the six checks and read the answers from the notes. Most come from OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252.
  4. 4If your permit or insurer asks for a longer fire watch than OSHA's minimum, say so clearly. The permit wins.

Questions people ask

What is a hot work permit?
A written authorization for welding, cutting, grinding or similar work, issued after someone checks that combustibles are cleared, openings are covered, extinguishers are ready and a fire watch is posted if needed.
How long does a fire watch need to stay after hot work?
OSHA requires at least 30 minutes after the work ends. NFPA 51B, many insurers and many sites require longer, so follow your permit.
What is the 35-foot rule for hot work?
Combustible materials within 35 feet of hot work must be moved away or protected with fire-resistant covers, and a fire watch is required where they remain.
