Set it right, check it first, climb with three points

🪜
Title

In short

A ladder safety toolbox talk is a short site briefing on choosing, setting up and climbing ladders safely. This free 13-slide pack covers the 4-to-1 rule, the pre-use inspection and three points of contact, then checks understanding with three questions the crew answers on their phones.

The questions

  1. 1Ladder safety
  2. 2One word: what goes wrong with ladders on our sites? live
  3. 3Most ladder falls aren't from great heights. They happen from a few rungs up, on a ladder that was the wrong one, badly set up or never checked.
  4. 4Set it up: the 4-to-1 rule
  5. 5Check it before every use
  6. 6Climbing: do and don't
  7. 7Pick the right ladder
  8. 8Three questions on your phone
  9. 9Your extension ladder reaches 16 feet up the wall. How far out should the base be?2 feet · 4 feet · 8 feet · It doesn't matter if it's tied off live
  10. 10What does three points of contact mean? Two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand · Both feet and your hip on the ladder · Three rungs between you and the top · Three people holding the ladder live
  11. 11You find a cracked side rail before you climb. What do you do?Climb carefully this once · Tape it and use it · Tag it out and tell the supervisor · Use it only below 6 feet live
  12. 12Where on this site today would a ladder be the wrong choice? live
  13. 13Set it. Check it. Three points.

How to run it

  1. 1Bring a real ladder from the site and set it up as you talk. Measure the 4-to-1 angle in front of the crew.
  2. 2Walk through the inspection checklist on the ladder you brought, pointing at each part.
  3. 3Run the three check questions on phones. If more than one or two people miss a question, go back over that slide.
  4. 4Finish with the open question and pull any damaged ladders from service before the crew starts work.

Questions people ask

What is the 4 to 1 rule for ladders?
For every 4 feet of height to where the ladder rests, the base goes 1 foot out from the wall. It puts the ladder at about 75 degrees.
What are the three points of contact on a ladder?
Two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand, touching the ladder at all times while you climb. Carry tools on a belt so your hands stay free.
How far should a ladder extend above the roof?
At least 3 feet above the landing surface when you use an extension ladder to get onto a roof or floor.
