Safety team training

Notice, tell, respond

Title

In short

A church security team, often called a safety team, is a group of volunteers who welcome people, watch for problems and respond to medical and other emergencies during services. This kit runs their monthly meeting: an incident debrief, an 11-slide training deck with a knowledge check, Sunday's posts and a vote on the next drill.

How to run it

  1. 1Meet monthly, at the same time, with everyone who serves on a post.
  2. 2Review incidents and near misses by facts only, then debrief without blame. Keep the names of people who were helped out of the record.
  3. 3Run the training slides. The sample covers noticing and responding, medical emergencies and children's check-out; swap in your own topic each month.
  4. 4Use the knowledge-check polls and talk through each answer.
  5. 5Confirm Sunday's posts, vote on the next drill and send the record.

Questions people ask

What does a church security team do?
Welcomes people, watches the building and the room, responds to medical emergencies, keeps children's check-out safe, and leads evacuations or calls 911 when needed. Most of the work is care, not confrontation.
How should a church safety team train?
Meet regularly, train on one topic at a time, practice real scenarios as drills, and debrief every incident or near miss without blame. First aid, CPR and AED training are a strong foundation.
What should an incident report include?
The date, time and location, what happened in plain facts, who responded and what they did, what went well and what to change. Keep personal details of the people helped to a minimum.
