Design charrette

Today we design it together, in short loops, out loud.

Title

In short

A charrette is an intensive, collaborative design workshop where designers and stakeholders work on a project together in short loops. This kit runs a half-day charrette: needs and worries collected on a live board, mixed teams sketching concepts, a phone vote and a clear direction with next steps.

How to run it

  1. 1Invite the people who will use, run, pay for and live next to the project, and mix them in every sketching team.
  2. 2Put the real constraints on screen early: budget, codes, site limits and dates.
  3. 3Collect needs, ideas and worries on the board from phones, then dot-vote so the sketching teams know what matters.
  4. 4Give each team a designer, the site plan, trace paper and 55 minutes. Pin up, then vote on phones.
  5. 5Close with the direction and the date of the next feedback loop. A charrette works when people see their input in the next round.

Questions people ask

What is a design charrette?
A focused, hands-on workshop where architects, planners and the people affected by a project design it together, testing ideas in quick rounds of sketching and feedback.
Where does the word charrette come from?
It's French for cart. Architecture students at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris kept working on their drawings until a cart came round to collect them.
How long is a charrette?
It varies. A focused building charrette can be a half or full day, while planning charrettes for neighborhoods often run over several days with feedback loops in between.
