Punch list walkthrough

Log it once, by trade, with a date. Then close it.

Title

In short

A construction punch list is the list of work still to finish or fix before a project is complete. This kit runs the walkthrough in an hour: everyone logs items by trade from their phone, then you agree owners and dates, book the back-check walk and email the numbered list.

-

Each trade: reply with a photo when an item is closed. Items not closed by the back-check stay open with a new date.

How to run it

  1. 1Ask the contractor to do its own pre-punch first, so the walkthrough finds what's genuinely left.
  2. 2Agree the route and the item format on the first two slides, then walk with phones out.
  3. 3Log each item into its trade's column as you find it: location, what's wrong, what done looks like.
  4. 4Back in the site office, merge duplicates, flag disputes and give every trade a completion date.
  5. 5Book the back-check walk before anyone leaves. The list goes out from the summary in the follow-up email.

Questions people ask

What is a punch list in construction?
A list of items that don't yet meet the contract, such as damaged finishes, missing parts or work that isn't complete, made near the end of a project. Each item is fixed and checked before final completion.
When is the punch list walkthrough done?
When the contractor believes the work is substantially complete. The contractor usually does its own pre-punch first, then the owner and architect walk to add what's left.
What should a punch list item include?
The exact location, the trade responsible, what's wrong, what done looks like, a due date and ideally a photo. Vague items like 'fix door' are the ones that never close.
