What's inside

By the end of this meeting, trustees understand how the library is doing, decide the policies and approvals in front of them and learn one thing about their role. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Send the packet, including the director's report and financials, a week ahead so the meeting is for questions and decisions.
  2. 2Put minutes, bills and the financial report on the consent agenda.
  3. 3Keep the director's report to the numbers that changed and one patron story.
  4. 4Use the ten-minute trustee education slot every month; it doubles as orientation for new trustees.
  5. 5Take formal votes by motion, and send the summary to the secretary for the minutes.

Questions people ask

What does a library board of trustees do?
It sets policy, adopts the budget, hires and evaluates the director and advocates for the library. The director runs day-to-day operations.
What should be in a library director's report?
A few key numbers against last year, such as visits, checkouts and program attendance, plus staffing, building issues, upcoming programs and one story about a patron.
How should new library trustees be oriented?
Give them the bylaws, policies, budget and recent minutes, a tour with the director, and a short education topic at each board meeting.
