In short

A practice plan is a coach's minute-by-minute schedule for a training session: warm-up, skill work, team concepts, competition and cool-down. This 90-minute template times each block on your phone, with notes for basketball and football, a competitive game the players vote on and a closing huddle.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, players have worked on one skill and one team concept, competed with both and know what got better. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Rename the stations and concept for your sport, and plan the whole practice before you arrive.
  2. 2Run the agenda on your phone: the timer for each block tells you when to blow the whistle and rotate.
  3. 3Keep players moving; aim for short instructions and many repetitions.
  4. 4Let players vote on the competitive game, and finish with a huddle where they name what improved.

Questions people ask

What should a practice plan include?
A warm-up, the day's one or two goals, skill work with lots of repetitions, a team concept, a competitive game or scrimmage, water breaks and a cool-down with a short huddle.
How do you plan a basketball practice?
Warm up, then rotate skill stations (ball handling, shooting, finishing), add pressure in a group drill, install one offensive or defensive concept, scrimmage with it and finish with free throws when tired.
How long should a practice be?
60 to 90 minutes for youth teams and up to two hours for high school. Shorter, faster practices with more repetitions beat long ones with a lot of standing around.
