Crew resource management

Communication, decisions and speaking up when it matters: a scenario-based refresher

Title

In short

Crew resource management (CRM) trains crews to use every person and resource to avoid errors: situational awareness, communication, decision making, leadership and teamwork. This 40-minute deck teaches PACE and DODAR through real-world scenarios, with anonymous decision polls and a speaking-up scale so junior crew members answer honestly.

What's inside

  1. 1Crew resource management
  2. 2CRM exists because skilled, experienced crews still make mistakes when what one person knows doesn't reach the person who needs it.
  3. 3Where CRM came from
  4. 4The six skills
  5. 5On approach, the first officer sees the captain has set the wrong altimeter setting. The captain is busy. What should the FO do?Wait for a quieter moment · Fix it quietly · Say it now, clearly and directly · Mention it after landing live
  6. 6Speaking up: PACE
  7. 7Closed-loop communication
  8. 8Deciding under pressure: DODAR
  9. 9A senior technician signs off a task you think was done out of sequence. No one else noticed. What do you do?Trust their experience · Ask them to walk you through it · Report it straight to quality · Note it and move on live
  10. 10Threat and error management
  11. 1110000 ft Below 10,000 feet, the sterile cockpit rule applies: only the talk the task needs. What's the critical phase in your work?
  12. 12Think of a time you noticed something but didn't say it. What made speaking up hard? live
  13. 13How easy is it to challenge a more senior colleague on this team? live
  14. 14Everyone on the crew is a safety system

How to run it

  1. 1Swap in scenarios from your own operation where you can: a near miss everyone knows, with names removed, lands better than any textbook case.
  2. 2Tell the room the polls are anonymous: the screen shows totals, never names. Junior staff answer more honestly when they know that.
  3. 3Run each scenario poll before you discuss it, then ask someone from the smaller side to explain their choice.
  4. 4Use the open question and the speaking-up scale to find where your culture makes challenge hard, then agree one habit to practice.

Questions people ask

What is crew resource management?
A set of non-technical skills that help teams avoid and catch errors: situational awareness, communication, decision making, leadership and followership, workload management and teamwork. It started in aviation after accidents caused by breakdowns between crew members.
Is CRM training required in aviation?
Yes for most commercial operators. In the US, Part 121 and Part 135 operators must give CRM training, and European operators must under EASA rules. Many maintenance teams and hospitals use it too.
What does PACE stand for in CRM?
Probe, Alert, Challenge, Emergency: a way to escalate a concern, from a question that invites a check up to direct action to prevent harm.
