Fire safety and extinguisher training

PASS, the classes of fire, and the call that matters most: fight it or leave

🧯
Title

In short

Fire extinguisher training teaches staff when it's safe to fight a small fire and how to use an extinguisher with PASS: pull, aim, squeeze, sweep. This 30-minute deck covers prevention, the classes of fire, evacuation and warden duties, with scenario polls and an open drill debrief people answer on their phones.

What's inside

  1. 1Fire safety and extinguisher training
  2. 2Have you ever used a fire extinguisher, including in training?Yes, on a real fire · Yes, in training · Never live
  3. 3An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
  4. 4Prevention starts with us
  5. 5Classes of fire
  6. 6Fight a fire only if it's small, you've been trained, you have the right extinguisher and your exit is behind you. If any one of those is missing, raise the alarm and leave.
  7. 7Using it: PASS
  8. 86 to 8 ft Start about 6 to 8 feet back and move closer as the fire shrinks. A portable extinguisher empties in seconds, not minutes.
  9. 9A wastebasket fire has spread to the curtain above it. You have an ABC extinguisher. What do you do?Fight it with PASS · Raise the alarm and get out · Throw water on it · Look for a bigger extinguisher live
  10. 10A pan of oil catches fire on the stove. What's the safest first move?Pour water on it · Cover it with a lid and turn off the heat · Carry the pan outside · Use the ABC extinguisher live
  11. 11When the alarm sounds
  12. 12Fire wardens: the job
  13. 13Think about our last fire drill. What slowed us down or confused people? live
  14. 14Know your two ways out

How to run it

  1. 1Fill in your extinguisher locations, assembly point and fire wardens before the session. Walk the route yourself first.
  2. 2Bring a real (discharged or training) extinguisher so people can hold it while you go through PASS.
  3. 3Run each scenario poll before you explain the answer. The split shows you who would have stayed to fight a fire that was already too big.
  4. 4Hold this soon after a fire drill and use the open question as the debrief. Turn the top answers into fixes with owners.

Questions people ask

What does PASS stand for in fire extinguisher training?
Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle and Sweep from side to side.
How often is fire extinguisher training required?
In the US, OSHA requires training when someone starts and at least once a year after that, where employees are expected to use portable extinguishers. Local fire codes may add more.
What does fire warden training cover?
How to sweep a zone, help people who need assistance, close doors, use refuge points and report to the incident lead at the assembly point.
What should a fire prevention presentation include?
Housekeeping and clear exits, electrical and heater safety, safe storage of flammables, knowing your exits and extinguishers, and what to do when the alarm sounds.
