Bloodborne pathogens: annual refresher

How exposure happens, how we prevent it, and exactly what to do if it does

Title

In short

Bloodborne pathogens training teaches staff who could contact blood how HBV, HCV and HIV spread, how to prevent exposure and what to do after one. This 30-minute deck follows OSHA's standard and adds live knowledge checks and an open question, so the session is interactive, as the rule expects.

What's inside

  1. 1Bloodborne pathogens: annual refresher
  2. 2How sure are you that you'd know what to do in the first five minutes after a needlestick? live
  3. 3Three pathogens to know
  4. 4How exposure happens at work
  5. 5Universal precautions: treat all human blood and potentially infectious body fluids as if they are infectious. Every time, for everyone.
  6. 6A colleague has a nosebleed at their desk. What do you reach for first?Paper towels · Gloves · The first-aid kit · Their manager live
  7. 7Your layers of protection
  8. 87 days Hepatitis B can survive in dried blood on a surface for at least 7 days (CDC). Clean every spill as if it were fresh.
  9. 9After an exposure: the first hour
  10. 10Sharps: do and don't
  11. 11Know the labels
  12. 12You see a used needle in a restroom trash can. What's your first move?Fish it out carefully with gloves · Leave it and warn people later · Keep people away and call [designated person] · Tip the bin into a sharps container live
  13. 13What's one thing here that makes safe handling harder than it should be? live
  14. 14Protect yourself first

How to run it

  1. 1Fill in the placeholders first: where your exposure control plan is kept, who to report to, and who handles sharps found in public areas.
  2. 2Ask everyone to join with their full name. The session summary then lists who attended, which helps with your training record.
  3. 3Run the confidence scale at the start, then pause on each knowledge-check poll: let the room vote, show the split, then give the answer from the notes.
  4. 4Leave real time for questions. OSHA expects trainees to be able to ask a knowledgeable trainer, so don't skip the open question.
  5. 5Read the open-question answers after the session and take the practical ones into your annual exposure control plan review.

Questions people ask

How often is bloodborne pathogens training required?
Under OSHA's standard, when someone is first assigned to tasks with possible exposure and at least once a year after that. Give extra training when tasks or procedures change.
Who needs bloodborne pathogens training?
Anyone whose job could reasonably bring them into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials: healthcare staff, designated first aiders, custodians, some school staff, tattoo artists and many others.
Can bloodborne pathogens training be done online?
Only if trainees can ask questions of a knowledgeable trainer and get answers during the session. OSHA requires that interactive element, which is why this deck uses live questions.
What should bloodborne pathogens training cover?
How the pathogens spread, your exposure control plan, engineering controls and safe work practices, PPE, the hepatitis B vaccine, what to do after an exposure, and signs and labels.
