In short

A Girl Scout or Cub Scout meeting usually runs about an hour: a gathering activity, an opening ceremony, a short business slot, skill time, a game and a closing ceremony. This 60-minute plan times each part, lets Scouts vote on the game and gives them time to plan the next outing themselves.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, every Scout has practiced one new skill, had fun, and helped plan what the troop does next. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Plan the skill and the game a week ahead, and get the supplies together before Scouts arrive.
  2. 2Start with a gathering activity so the meeting begins the moment the first Scout walks in.
  3. 3Keep business to five minutes and spend the most time on doing: skill practice and the game.
  4. 4Let the Scouts plan the next outing or service project themselves; adults check what's safe and possible.
  5. 5Close with your troop's ceremony and send families the summary with dates and permission slips.

Questions people ask

How do you structure a Girl Scout meeting?
Many troops use a start-up or gathering activity, an opening with the Girl Scout Promise and Law, troop business, the main activity, clean-up and a closing such as a friendship circle.
What is the difference between a den meeting and a pack meeting?
In Cub Scouts, a den is a small group of Scouts of the same grade that meets often. The pack meeting brings all the dens together, usually monthly, for recognition and a shared program.
What are good Girl Scout meeting ideas?
Activities that work toward a badge or Journey, service projects the girls choose, outdoor skills and games. Let the Scouts suggest and vote; girl-led planning is part of the Girl Scout approach.
