In short

A department meeting brings teachers of one subject or grade together to plan and solve problems. This 45-minute agenda keeps updates to email and spends the time on one set of student data, the next unit's common assessment and pacing, a vote on the team's focus and tasks with owners.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the team has looked at one set of student data together, agreed the plan for the next unit and shared out the tasks. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Send updates by email the day before so the meeting can be about students and planning.
  2. 2Ask everyone to bring results from the same assessment, or the same piece of student work.
  3. 3Look at the data before discussing solutions; the protocol questions keep it on evidence.
  4. 4Decide the next unit's common assessment and split the planning tasks between colleagues.
  5. 5Rotate the facilitator role so the meeting belongs to the team, not only the department head.

Questions people ask

What should be on a department meeting agenda?
A quick check-in, last meeting's tasks, short updates, a look at student data or work, planning for the next unit and shared tasks with owners. Put pure information in an email.
What is a grade level meeting?
The same meeting for teachers of one grade in an elementary or middle school. This agenda works for it unchanged; pick a grade-wide assessment for the data discussion.
How often should departments meet?
Many schools meet weekly or every other week. The cadence is often set by the school calendar or a contract, so check yours.
