In short

An SST meeting (student study team or student success team) is a general education problem-solving meeting about one student's progress. This 45-minute agenda follows the MTSS cycle: strengths, data, a measurable problem statement, hypotheses, an intervention plan with an owner and a review date for the progress data.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the team has defined the problem in measurable terms and agreed an intervention, its owner, how progress is measured and the review date. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Collect the data before the meeting: benchmark and progress-monitoring results, attendance, behavior and work samples.
  2. 2Invite the family and the classroom teacher, and open with the student's strengths.
  3. 3Push the team to define the problem as a measurable gap before anyone suggests an intervention.
  4. 4Leave with a written plan: the intervention, who delivers it, how often, how progress is measured and the review date.
  5. 5Remember that an SST or RTI process can't delay a special education evaluation the family requests.

Questions people ask

What is an SST meeting?
A meeting of a student study team (or student success team): teachers, specialists, an administrator and the family meet to plan support for a student who is struggling, inside general education.
Is an SST meeting the same as an IEP meeting?
No. An SST plans general education interventions. An IEP meeting is for a student found eligible for special education. An SST can lead to a referral for evaluation.
Can an RTI or SST process delay a special education evaluation?
No. The US Department of Education's OSEP memo 11-07 says an RTI process cannot be used to delay or deny an evaluation. Parents can request one at any time.
