Lift smart

Back safety for the loads you move every day

Title

In short

A lifting safety talk teaches people to plan a lift, keep the load close, bend the knees, lift with the legs and pivot instead of twisting. This pack adds a live demo slide, five posture checks the crew votes on, and an open question about which lifts need equipment.

  6. 6Where's the safest zone to carry a load?Close, between shoulders and waist · At arm's length · Above your head · Below your knees live
  7. 7You need to turn while carrying a load. How?Pivot with your feet · Twist at the waist · Turn your shoulders first · Swing the load round live
  8. 8Moving a heavy cart: push or pull?Push · Pull · Either is the same · Drag it sideways live
  9. 9Do back belts prevent lifting injuries? No good evidence they do · Yes, always wear one · Only for heavy lifts · Only in cold weather live
  10. 10Halfway through a lift, the box is heavier than you expected. What now?Set it down and get help · Push through quickly · Twist to drop it on a shelf · Hold your breath and keep going live
  11. 1151 lb The NIOSH lifting equation's starting weight under ideal conditions. Reaching, twisting and frequent lifts make the safe limit much lower.
  12. 12Which lift on our site should always use equipment or two people? live
  13. 13Your back has to last your whole life

How to run it

  1. 1Bring a real box or item from your site for the demo slide, and pick a volunteer in advance.
  2. 2Ask the word cloud question first, so the talk is about the loads your crew actually moves.
  3. 3Have the volunteer show each step of the lift while you read it from the slide.
  4. 4Run the five checks, reading the answer from the notes, and finish by listing which lifts need equipment or a second person.

Questions people ask

What are the steps of a safe lift?
Size up the load, plan the route, get close, take a wide stance, bend your knees with a straight back, lift with your legs, and pivot with your feet instead of twisting.
How much weight is safe to lift?
It depends on the lift. The NIOSH lifting equation starts at 51 pounds for ideal conditions, and reaching, twisting or frequent lifting bring the safe weight well below that.
Do back belts help with lifting?
NIOSH found no good evidence that back belts prevent back injuries in healthy workers. Good technique, lighter loads and lifting aids work better.
