Stress less

An hour to notice it, try two resets and pick one change

Title

In short

Stress management activities are simple practices that help people notice stress and calm their body and mind, such as box breathing and grounding. This kit runs them as a 60-minute workshop with an anonymous stress poll, two techniques tried in the room, a drains-and-recharges board, one change per person and support details.

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, everyone has tried two simple calming techniques, named what drains and recharges them, and chosen one small change for this week.

Stress management workshop: your toolkit

Thanks for taking an hour for yourself today.

The two techniques
Box breathing: in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. Four rounds.
5-4-3-2-1 grounding: 5 things you see, 4 you feel, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste.

Your one small change this week: ______

What the team said drains us most: ______
What we'll look at together: ______ (owner ______)

Support
Employee assistance program: ______ (confidential)
US: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
UK and Ireland: Samaritans, 116 123
In an emergency, call emergency services.

How to run it

  1. 1Replace the support slide with your employee assistance program and local numbers before the session.
  2. 2Say at the start that nobody has to share and that every answer is anonymous.
  3. 3Do both techniques for real, with the timer running. Trying them is what makes people use them later.
  4. 4Look for drains the team could change together, and give at least one an owner.
  5. 5This is a wellbeing session, not therapy. Point anyone who's struggling to the support options, privately as well as on the slide.

Questions people ask

What are good stress management activities for work?
Box breathing, 5-4-3-2-1 grounding, short walks, screen breaks and writing down worries. They work best when the team also looks at what causes stress in the first place.
What are simple mindfulness activities for work?
Focusing on your breath for a minute, a grounding exercise that names what you can see, feel and hear, or eating lunch away from your screen and paying attention to it.
Is this a substitute for mental health support?
No. It's a wellbeing session. Share your employee assistance program and local support lines, and encourage anyone who's struggling to talk to a professional.
