Check-in

How are we really doing?

Title

In short

A mental health check-in is a short, regular moment where a team or class shares how they're doing. This pack asks eight gentle questions people answer anonymously on their phones, including scales, a weather poll and a word cloud, then shares small things that help and where to get support.

The questions

  1. 1Check-in
  2. 2Votes are anonymous. Nobody sees who chose what. Skip anything you'd rather not answer.
  3. 3How are you doing this week, honestly? live
  4. 4What weather matches your week?Sunny · Partly cloudy · Foggy · Rainy · Stormy live
  5. 5One word for your energy today live
  6. 6How well have you been sleeping lately? live
  7. 7What's taking most of your energy right now?Workload · Home and family · Health · Money · The world in general · Nothing much, I'm OK live
  8. 8How connected do you feel to the people around you here? live
  9. 9What helps you reset after a hard day?Moving: walk, gym, sport · Time outside · Talking to someone · Quiet time alone · A hobby · Sleep live
  10. 10What's one small thing that would help you this week? live
  11. 11Small things that help
  12. 12If you're struggling, you don't have to wait. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans on 116 123. Add our support contacts here.
  13. 13Thanks for checking in

How to run it

  1. 1Say up front that votes are anonymous and that anyone can skip any question.
  2. 2Go at a calm pace. Show results without comment first, then say one thing you notice.
  3. 3Don't ask anyone to explain their answer in front of the group. Offer a one-to-one afterwards instead.
  4. 4Add your own support details (EAP, school counselor, HR contact) to the support slide before you start.
  5. 5This is a conversation starter, not a clinical screening tool. Teachers should follow their school's safeguarding process if they're worried about a student.

Questions people ask

What are good mental health check-in questions?
Gentle, easy-to-answer questions: how are you doing this week, what weather matches your week, how are you sleeping, what's taking your energy, and what would help. Let people skip any of them.
How do you run a mental health check-in with a team?
Keep answers anonymous, show results without singling anyone out, and offer one-to-one follow-up. Run it regularly so it feels normal, not alarming.
Can I use this with students?
Yes, for older students. Follow your school's safeguarding process if an answer worries you, and add your school counselor's details to the support slide.
