How to run it

  1. 1This pack is for qualified facilitators: counselors, therapists and trained support group leaders. Adapt it to your group and setting.
  2. 2Open with the group agreements and the anonymous check-in. Votes are anonymous, so people can be honest without being singled out.
  3. 3Run one or more modules: CBT thinking traps, DBT skills or grounding. Each takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. 4Invite sharing, never require it. Open answers are read by the facilitator and shared only in general terms.
  5. 5Close with the check-out scale and remind the group where to get help between sessions.

Questions people ask

What are good CBT group therapy activities?
Spotting thinking traps such as all-or-nothing thinking, mind reading and catastrophizing, then rewriting one thought from the week in a more balanced way.
What are good DBT group activities?
Practising distress tolerance skills such as STOP and TIPP together, then choosing one skill to try before the next session.
Can these activities be used with teenagers?
Yes, with a qualified facilitator. Anonymous polls help teens answer honestly, and the examples are everyday situations they'll recognize.
