In short

A support group meeting brings people with a shared experience together to talk and support each other, led by a facilitator. This 75-minute format starts with a confidentiality reminder and a check-in round, then a topic, a sharing round and a coping skill, a vote on the next topic and a closing round.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, everyone who wants to speak has been heard, the group has shared one coping idea and people leave a little lighter. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Set up the room or call so people can join with a first name only, and repeat the confidentiality agreement every meeting.
  2. 2Keep the same shape each week; the predictability helps people feel safe.
  3. 3Let anyone pass in any round, and keep shares to a few minutes so everyone has room.
  4. 4Have crisis resources ready and know what you'll do if someone discloses risk.
  5. 5Let the group vote on the next topic so the meeting belongs to them.

Questions people ask

How do you start a support group meeting?
Welcome people, repeat the confidentiality agreement and any limits to it, then go round with a short check-in where anyone can pass.
What are good support group topics?
Setting boundaries, sleep and rest, getting through hard days, asking for help, self-compassion, relationships and family, and handling setbacks.
What activities work in a support group?
A check-in round, a breathing or grounding exercise practiced together, a sharing round on a topic, and a closing round where each person names one thing they'll take with them.
