In short

A family council is an independent group of residents' families and friends in a nursing home or care home that works to improve residents' quality of life. This 60-minute agenda reviews the facility's responses, collects new concerns on phones, holds a Q&A with invited staff and agrees written recommendations.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the council has reviewed the facility's responses, agreed which new concerns to raise in writing and put its questions to the invited staff. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Run it as the families' meeting: a family member chairs and staff come only by invitation.
  2. 2Start with the facility's responses to last month's concerns, so the council can see what's changed.
  3. 3Collect concerns on phones so families who can't attend in person still have a say.
  4. 4Send recommendations to the administrator in writing after each meeting, and track their responses.
  5. 5In US nursing homes, federal rules give families the right to meet as a council and require the facility to listen and respond to its concerns.

Questions people ask

What is a family council in a nursing home?
A self-led group of residents' families and friends that meets to share concerns, learn about care and make recommendations to the facility.
Can nursing home staff attend family council meetings?
Only when the council invites them. In US nursing homes, federal rules let staff attend at the group's invitation and require the facility to name a staff contact who responds to the council's written requests.
How do you start a family council?
Find two or three interested families, ask the facility for a meeting room, set a regular time, and agree simple ground rules and a chair.
