Crane and rigging safety

Plan the lift. Check the gear. One signal person.

Title

In short

Crane safety means planning every lift, inspecting rigging, keeping people clear of suspended loads and using agreed signals. This pack covers the lift plan, sling checks, how sling angles raise tension, rules during the lift and a round of six standard hand signals the crew identifies on their phones.

How to run it

  1. 1Run it on the morning of a lift, with the operator, signal person and riggers together.
  2. 2Go through the lift plan for today: load weight, rigging, path, landing zone and who gives signals.
  3. 3For the hand signal round, have the signal person demonstrate each one from the description before the crew votes.
  4. 4End with the open question and settle any concern before the first pick.

Questions people ask

What are the basic crane hand signals?
The standard signals include stop, emergency stop, hoist, lower, raise boom, lower boom, swing and dog everything. OSHA's crane standard shows them in Appendix A to Subpart CC.
How do sling angles affect the load?
The flatter the sling, the more tension each leg carries. At a 30-degree angle from horizontal, each leg of a two-leg sling carries the full weight of the load.
How often should rigging be inspected?
A competent person inspects rigging before each shift and during use when needed. Remove any sling with damage or a missing tag from service.
