The questions

  1. 1Scaffold safety
  2. 2How often do you check the tag before climbing a scaffold? live
  3. 3A scaffold is a temporary structure carrying people and materials high above the ground. It's only safe if it was built right and nothing has changed since it was checked.
  4. 4What the competent person checks every shift
  5. 5Using it safely
  6. 6A common tag system
  7. 7Would you climb it?
  8. 8The tag is green and was signed this morning. Planks and guardrails look complete.Climb it · Don't climb it · Ask first live
  9. 9The tag is yellow and says a harness is required above the second lift.Climb it as normal · Climb with a harness, tied off as the tag says · Don't climb it · Ignore the tag live
  10. 10There's no tag at all, but the scaffold looks finished.Climb it · Don't climb it. Ask the supervisor. · Climb only the first lift · Climb it if others are up there live
  11. 11The tag is green, but a guardrail has been removed to land materials.Climb it, the tag is green · Don't use it until fixed and re-inspected · Use it carefully · Put a rope across the gap live
  12. 12What scaffold problem have you seen on this job that we should fix? live
  13. 13Check the tag. Every time.

How to run it

  1. 1Give the talk at the base of the scaffold the crew will use today, so you can point at the tag, base plates and access.
  2. 2Before the tag round, explain your site's tag system. Colors are a common convention, not an OSHA rule, so check yours matches.
  3. 3Run the questions on phones. Anyone unsure about a red or missing tag gets a one-to-one before going up.
  4. 4Close with the open question and fix what's raised before work starts on the platform.

Questions people ask

How often must scaffolds be inspected?
OSHA requires a competent person to inspect scaffolds and their components for visible defects before each work shift and after any occurrence that could affect their structural integrity.
What do scaffold tag colors mean?
Many sites use green for safe to use, yellow for use with the conditions written on the tag and red for do not use. OSHA doesn't set the colors, so follow your site's system.
At what height do you need fall protection on a scaffold?
Under OSHA construction rules, workers on scaffold platforms 10 feet or more above a lower level need guardrails or personal fall arrest.
