Fall protection

Edges, holes and harnesses: what keeps you from the ground

Title

In short

A fall protection toolbox talk reminds crews when protection is required and how to use it. This free 15-slide pack covers OSHA's 6-foot rule, guardrails, hole covers, a hands-on harness inspection, fitting and anchors, the rescue plan and four check questions the crew answers on their phones.

The questions

  1. 1Fall protection
  2. 2Falls are the leading cause of death in construction. Most are from roofs, ladders and scaffolds, and most are preventable.
  3. 3When you need protection
  4. 4Guardrails, covers and nets come first
  5. 5Check your harness
  6. 6Wear it right
  7. 7A rescue plan is part of fall protection. Someone hanging in a harness needs help fast, so we plan it before anyone goes up, not after.
  8. 8Four questions
  9. 9At what height does OSHA require fall protection on most construction work?4 feet · 6 feet · 10 feet · 15 feet live
  10. 10Your lanyard's fall indicator has deployed. What now?Reset it and carry on · Use it until the end of the shift · Take it out of service and report it · Use it only on low work live
  11. 11Where should the D-ring on a full-body harness sit?On the lower back · Between the shoulder blades · At the chest · At the hip live
  12. 12You find an uncovered hole in the deck. What do you do first?Step around it · Guard or cover it, or barricade it and tell the supervisor · Put a cone next to it · Tell the next shift live
  13. 13How confident are you in your harness inspection? live
  14. 14Where on this site could someone fall six feet or more today? live
  15. 15Check it. Clip in. Come home.

How to run it

  1. 1Bring a harness and lanyard. Pause on the harness check slide and have each worker inspect their own as you read the steps.
  2. 2Walk to a real edge or opening on site, if it's safe, and ask what protects it.
  3. 3Run the check questions on phones and go back over any slide that more than a couple of people miss.
  4. 4Confirm the rescue plan out loud: who goes, with what, if someone is hanging in a harness.

Questions people ask

What is the OSHA 6-foot rule?
On construction sites, workers on surfaces with unprotected sides or edges 6 feet or more above a lower level must be protected by guardrails, safety nets or personal fall arrest.
How often should a harness be inspected?
By the user before every use, and periodically by a competent person. Remove any harness that has arrested a fall or shows cuts, burns, broken stitching or damaged hardware.
Is a toolbox talk enough fall protection training?
No. OSHA requires formal training by a competent person for workers exposed to fall hazards. A toolbox talk is a regular reminder on top of that training.
