Pick the right gear, check it, wear it properly

⛑️
Title

In short

A PPE toolbox talk is a short briefing on choosing, inspecting and wearing personal protective equipment. This free pack covers head-to-toe PPE, the pre-shift inspection and four job scenes where the crew votes on their phones for what's missing, followed by a fit check and an open question.

The questions

  1. 1PPE: the last line of defense
  2. 2PPE doesn't remove the hazard. It's what stands between you and it when every other control has done what it can. So it has to be the right gear, in good shape, worn properly.
  3. 3Head to toe
  4. 4Inspect before every shift
  5. 5Four scenes. Vote for what's missing.
  6. 6Scene 1: cutting metal studs with a chop saw. Hard hat, hi-vis, gloves, earplugs, safety boots. What's missing?Eye protection · Fall harness · Nothing, they're covered · Chemical gloves live
  7. 7Scene 2: flagging traffic at a roadwork zone at dusk. Hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, safety boots. What's missing?Hearing protection · High-visibility vest or jacket · Face shield · Nothing, they're covered live
  8. 8Scene 3: clearing brush with a chainsaw. Hard hat, face screen, safety glasses, gloves, chainsaw chaps, boots. What's missing?Hearing protection · Hi-vis vest · Respirator · Nothing, they're covered live
  9. 9Scene 4: mixing a chemical concrete additive. Hard hat, safety glasses, cotton work gloves, boots. What's wrong?Wrong gloves for chemicals · Missing hi-vis · Missing earplugs · Nothing, they're covered live
  10. 10Cement and wet concrete can cause serious skin burns. Waterproof gloves and boots, and washing skin straight away, matter more than people think.
  11. 11How well does your PPE fit and work for you? live
  12. 12What PPE do you need that's missing, worn out or doesn't fit? live
  13. 13Right gear. Checked. Worn properly.

How to run it

  1. 1Bring a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves and hearing protection to hold up as you go through the inspection slide.
  2. 2Read each scene out loud and let the crew vote on what's missing. Reveal the split, then give the answer from the notes.
  3. 3Ask the people who voted differently why. Those reasons often show a gap in what PPE is on site.
  4. 4Close with the open question and order anything that's missing, worn out or doesn't fit.

Questions people ask

What should a PPE toolbox talk cover?
Why PPE is the last line of defense, what to wear for this week's tasks, how to inspect it before each shift and how to report gear that's damaged or doesn't fit.
Who pays for PPE?
In the US, OSHA requires employers to pay for most required PPE. There are a few exceptions, such as ordinary safety-toe boots and prescription safety glasses that can be worn off the job.
How often should PPE be inspected?
Before every use. Replace anything cracked, torn, worn or past its service life, and any hard hat that has taken a heavy hit.
