Electrical safety

Cords, GFCIs, power lines and lockout: the basics that keep you alive

⚡
Title

In short

An electrical safety toolbox talk is a short site briefing on avoiding shocks and electrocution. This free 16-slide pack covers GFCIs, cord inspection, the 10-foot rule for overhead lines and lockout basics, then runs five spot-the-hazard scenes the crew votes on from their phones.

The questions

  1. 1Electrical safety
  2. 2One word: where do you meet electricity on this job? live
  3. 3Electricity gives no warning. You can't see, hear or smell a live conductor, so we treat every circuit as live until it's been proven dead.
  4. 4Four rules
  5. 5Using a GFCI
  6. 6Cords: keep or tag out?
  7. 7Lockout basics
  8. 8Picture the scene. What's the hazard?
  9. 9A cord runs through a doorway and the door is closed on it every time someone passes.Fine if the cord is new · Hazard: the cord gets crushed · Fine if it's taped down · Hazard only when it rains live
  10. 10A worker carries an aluminum extension ladder under an overhead power line to the next wall.Safe if the ladder is lowered · Hazard: contact with the line · Safe if they wear gloves · Safe in dry weather live
  11. 11A drill keeps tripping the GFCI. A workmate says plug it straight into the wall instead.Good idea, the GFCI is faulty · Hazard: the tool may be leaking current · Fine for a quick job · Fine with rubber boots live
  12. 12A three-prong plug has had its ground pin cut off so it fits a two-prong adapter.Fine, it still works · Hazard: no path to ground if it faults · Fine indoors · Fine if double-insulated live
  13. 13A panel cover is off and the electrician has gone to lunch.Fine, they'll be back soon · Hazard: exposed live parts · Fine if nobody touches it · Fine if a cone is next to it live
  14. 14How confident are you spotting a damaged cord before you use it? live
  15. 15Where on this site have you seen an electrical hazard this week? live
  16. 16Treat it as live

How to run it

  1. 1Bring a GFCI, a good extension cord and a damaged one if you have it. Press the GFCI test button in front of the crew.
  2. 2Talk through the four rules, then read each spot-the-hazard scene slowly before people vote.
  3. 3After each vote, give the answer from the notes and ask where we have the same problem on this site.
  4. 4Finish with the open question and tag out any damaged cords or tools before work starts.

Questions people ask

What should an electrical safety toolbox talk cover?
GFCI use, daily cord and tool inspection, distance from overhead power lines, lockout before working on equipment, and what to do when a GFCI keeps tripping.
Do construction sites need GFCIs?
Yes. OSHA requires GFCI protection for 120-volt, single-phase 15, 20 and 30 amp outlets that aren't part of the permanent wiring, unless the employer runs an assured equipment grounding conductor program.
How far should you stay from overhead power lines?
At least 10 feet for lines up to 50 kV, and further for higher voltages. Cranes and other equipment have their own clearance rules.
Is a toolbox talk enough electrical safety training?
No. It's an awareness reminder. Workers who work on or near exposed live parts or apply lockout need full training for those tasks.
