How to run it

  1. 1Schedule it for the first hot week of the year and repeat it before every heat wave. New starters hear it on their first day.
  2. 2Point out where the water, shade and cool-down area are on this site before you start the slides.
  3. 3Run the symptom questions on phones. Spend the most time on the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  4. 4Agree the buddy system: everyone watches one named workmate for the signs today.

Questions people ask

What are the signs of heat stroke?
Confusion, slurred speech, fainting or seizures, and very high body temperature. The skin may be hot and dry or still sweating. Call 911, cool the person and stay with them.
How much water should workers drink in the heat?
OSHA advises about one cup (8 ounces) every 15 to 20 minutes during moderate work in the heat, even if you're not thirsty.
What should heat illness prevention training cover?
Water, rest and shade, building up time in the heat for new workers, the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, first aid and how to call for help from your site.
