Silica dust

What you can't see is what hurts you

Title

In short

Silica safety protects workers from respirable crystalline silica, the fine dust from cutting, grinding or drilling concrete, brick and stone. This pack explains the health effects, how OSHA's Table 1 controls work, safe clean-up and a five-point dust-control checklist the crew answers on their phones.

The questions

  1. 1Silica dust
  2. 2What tasks on this job make dust? live
  3. 3Crystalline silica is in concrete, brick, block, mortar, stone and many tiles. Cutting, grinding, drilling or crushing them makes dust fine enough to reach deep into the lungs.
  4. 4What it does
  5. 5How Table 1 works
  6. 6Clean-up
  7. 7Dust-control checklist
  8. 8Is your water feed or vacuum shroud fitted and working?Yes · No · Not sure live
  9. 9Is the water flow or vacuum suction strong enough to stop visible dust at the blade or bit?Yes · No · Not sure live
  10. 10Is the vacuum the right type, with its filter and bags in good shape?Yes · No · Not sure live
  11. 11Does Table 1 call for a respirator for your task today, and do you have a fit-tested one?Not needed for my task · Needed and I have it · Needed and I don't have it · Not sure live
  12. 12Is anyone else working in your dust, close by or downwind? No · Yes · Not sure live
  13. 13How well do you know the right controls for your dusty tasks? live
  14. 14What makes dust control hard on this site? live
  15. 15Wet it. Vac it. Protect your lungs.

How to run it

  1. 1Check which tasks on site this week cut, grind, drill or crush concrete, brick, block, stone or tile, and start with those.
  2. 2Bring the actual saw or grinder with its water feed or shroud and vacuum, and show the controls working.
  3. 3Run the dust-control checklist as polls. Any 'no' answer is something to fix before the task starts.
  4. 4Remind the crew where your written exposure control plan is and who the competent person is.

Questions people ask

What is OSHA Table 1 for silica?
Table 1 in OSHA's construction silica standard lists common tasks and the dust controls and respirators to use for each. Following it fully means you don't need to measure exposure for that task.
Is dry sweeping silica dust allowed?
No, not where it could add to exposure, unless wet methods or vacuuming aren't feasible. Use a HEPA-filtered vacuum or wet methods instead.
What health problems does silica cause?
Silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease. Damage builds up over years and can't be reversed.
