In short

A safety committee is a group of employees and managers who meet regularly to find and fix workplace hazards. This 60-minute agenda starts with open corrective actions, then reviews incidents, near misses, inspections and training, collects concerns from the floor on phones and ends with next month's focus and owned actions.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the committee has reviewed incidents, inspections and open actions, heard concerns from the floor and agreed new actions with owners. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Meet monthly at a fixed time, with members from both management and the floor.
  2. 2Start with open corrective actions, so the committee is judged on what it closes, not what it opens.
  3. 3Collect concerns on phones; members can add what coworkers asked them to raise.
  4. 4Give every new action an owner and a due date, and use the summary as the basis for your minutes.
  5. 5Check your state's rules: some states require safety committees and set how often they meet and what the minutes must show.

Questions people ask

Does OSHA require a safety committee?
Federal OSHA doesn't require most employers to have one, but several states do, including Oregon and Washington. Their rules set committee size, makeup, meeting frequency and minutes.
What does a safety committee discuss?
Open corrective actions, incidents and near misses, inspection findings, training, concerns raised by employees and upcoming safety priorities.
What are good safety committee ideas?
Rotate who does monthly inspections, pick one focus topic a month, share near-miss stories, and report back to the floor on every concern raised.
