In short

A safety briefing is a short talk before work or a leave period that covers the hazards ahead, the controls for each and the emergency plan. This 15-minute template has the crew name hazards on their phones, walks the hierarchy of controls, repeats stop-work authority and ends with an anonymous check that everyone is clear.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, everyone knows the hazards ahead, the controls for each and what to do in an emergency, and has had the chance to ask. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Brief at the work location before the job starts, or on the last afternoon before a weekend or leave period.
  2. 2Ask the crew to name the hazards on their phones first, then fill the gaps.
  3. 3Walk the controls from elimination down to PPE, and repeat stop-work authority every time.
  4. 4Use the anonymous check to find anyone unsure, then answer their question before work starts.
  5. 5Keep the summary as your record of who was briefed and what was covered.

Questions people ask

What should be included in a safety briefing?
The work ahead, the hazards, the controls for each hazard, the emergency plan and who to call, stop-work authority, and a check that everyone has understood.
What is covered in a weekend safety brief?
Travel plans and fatigue, drinking and driving, weather and water safety, staying with a buddy, emergency contacts and the time everyone is due back.
How long should a safety brief be?
Five to fifteen minutes. Long enough to name the real hazards, short enough that people listen.
